Parts
If you want to source all the parts yourself, the old build guide has a full BOM.
Required Tools
- Soldering iron. Typical hobby soldering irons should work. I’d recommend one with adjustable temperature. I use a old, entry level Weller soldering iron station (WES50). I see Hakko recommended quite often. Use a tip suitable for small electronics. I’d try a chisel tip 1.5mm - 2.5mm if buying now. The tip I use isn’t available anymore, looks similar to a bevel tip roughly 2mm wide.
- Solder. I use Chipquik SMDSWLF .020. This is a lead free solder. It is a bit harder to work with compared to older, 60/40 leaded solder I have: Kester 24-6040-0027. I am no expert on solder.
- Solder wick or desoldering pump to correct mistakes
- Decent tweezers for holding small parts
- Flush cutters to trim diode leads
- 1.5mm hex key for the set screw on the encoder knob
Optional
- No-clean flux makes soldering easier. I use Chipquick CQ4LF and like it. I haven’t tried any others.
- Small needle nose pliers for pushing diode leads into sockets
- Electrical tape for insulating the OLED
